Recently Bluegrass Yacht & Country Club was able to acquire a bed knife and reel grinder for our operation. These two units are key instruments to the golf course operation that have not been present before.
A bed knife grinder is a sharping tool that grinds the edge of a bed knife, which is the straight edge that allows grass to be cut cleanly when the reel passes over, very similar to scissors cutting a piece of paper.

A reel grinder is also a sharping tool that grinds each blade of a reel, which are the spinning part of a cutting unit that you frequently see discarding grass when mowing.

Now having the ability to sharpen the cutting units in house, we will be able to provide a more cleaner constant cut of turf all year long. Not only will the golf course receive a better cut of turf, but the cleaner cuts of turf will reduce the amount of injury to leaf blades and chance for infection from diseases. Over the past years, without a bed knife or reel grinder, this procedure was outsourced at a cost and an inconvenience when mowers needed to be sharpened quickly and put back in service.
