Driving Range Tee Sand Divot Boxes

The Driving Range Tee is fully open for the golf season on the turf until fall overseeding. Soon the bermuda grass will be aggressively growing and to help ensure a quick and smooth recovery from divots removed, our staff fills each divot with sand.  This year we have added a new step to the process of filling divots. Each day on the turf there are two sand divot stations behind the hitting area for members to assist in filling divots, just as on the par 3 tees on the course. When you are finished practicing, please use these sand stations to fill your divots and provide a smooth surface for the next member to practice. Having a smooth sanded divot provides a protected area for the bermuda grass to regenerate. Thanks for your help in assisting a speeding recovery on the driving range tee.

Winter Annuals

Our winter annuals have begun to come to life as the weather warms. The pansies are blooming and the tulips are reaching for the skies. Soon the summer annuals will be arriving in early May and begin their life cycle until the fall. Below are a few pictures of the front annuals.

Drainage

The recent rains earlier have made apparent some drainage issues on the course. The GCM Staff have corrected these problems and water is following in the right direction. The first issue was the 12″ drainage pipe running across #3 fairway. This problem was from the abundant amounts of water flowing through the pipe and caused the pipe to raise to the surface of turf and allow water to escape from the pipe.

We were able to regrade the area under the pipe and reenforce the pipe with ground anchors and cable along with fastening the pipe together with screws.

We also found to the right of #7 tee a set of drainage pipes not tied into any piping to allow water to exit the property. This problem had caused a spring and wet area to the right of #8 fairway. This set of drainage pipes were removed and installed into a larger drainage system to handle the amount of water produced and is following into the nearby creek. The recent rains and snow have proved the new drainage system is working and this area is drier than ever before.

Aerification

Early spring aerification is behind us and the next aerification is scheduled for early May. Each aerification performed is a necessary cultural practice to remove organic matter and provide open channels for water to pass through and gases to be exchanged. Every aerification timing has a specific purpose as well, the early aerification is a chance to wake the greens up from the winter, the early summer aerification is mainly to remove organic material, and the fall aerification is also for organic material removal and summer stress recovery.

This early spring aerification was a chore with delays from snow and cold weather, but currently we are about two weeks from performing the procedure an about 75-90% healed in. As the weather continues to build we will soon be back to normal and in full swing.
