Preventative Equipment Maintenance

Every year when the colder weather arrives and mowers settled down from the long busy summer, our staff begins the preventative equipment maintenance practices. During this time each piece of equipment is evaluated for worn parts and parts that are in need of replacement. Once evaluated, services are performed on the equipment like changing engine oil/hydraulic fluids and filters. Also reel and blades are sharpened so mowers are prepared for the busy upcoming season. The staff’s last duty for preventative equipment maintenance is to wash and wax the equipment. Golf course equipment is put to the test each and everyday and having properly functioning equipment that looks and operates as if new is a must. Below you will see one of the last steps of this process, waxing the equipment.

#11/#14 Tree Canopy Lift

Over the years the tree lines on #11 and #14 have slowly grew and intruded into the fairways. Some points of the fairway were not accessible off the tee box from tree canopies blocking the line of flight. Recently, through rain and cold weather, our tree experts Hutchinson Tree Service finished the operation of raising the tree canopies and removing limbs that intruded over the fairway. Not only will these missing tree limbs provide a better golfing hole, but also allow sunlight into shaded areas of turf that have struggled for years due to lack of sunlight. There are other areas of the golf course that we are looking to proceed with this operation in the near future.

Flag Pole Island Make Over

The first time I ever pulled into Bluegrass Yacht and Country Club I was amazed by the entrance canopy of all the cedars trees coming up the drive, but after pulling up to the front door, I was disappointed you could not see the beauty of the clubhouse. Over the past two years we have been tweaking the view into the property entering the club. Originally the flag pole circle had hollies that were over 6′ tall hedge.  A year ago the hedge was reduced to under a 4′ tall, now the hedge is no more. This past fall our staff removed the hollies, installed an automated irrigation system, and installed a large flower bed. The bed is angled at the front door when you are exiting the clubhouse and angled at cars entering the parking lot. The added flower bed will allow a view into the clubhouse as you are entering the property and also give more color around the club.

In the background you can see the old 6′ hollie hedge to the right and then the reduction to a 4″ hedge on the left as the project began.

Painting Tee Markers/Cart Exit Posts

During the winter season, the cold weather gives our staff the opportunity to dress up the on course amenities. Each year the staff brings in all the tee markers, cart exit posts, ball washers, trash cans,  etc. into the shop for a fresh coat of paint. This season the staff has worked hard and already completed painting all the tee markers and cart exit posts.

pond 005 A new touch for this year, to keep the same color theme throughout the course, has been painting the water coolers out on the course. The water coolers were the last remaining piece of the course that was not with the color theme. All the water coolers have now been painted black and reinstalled on the course.

Rock Steps #4

This week our staff has completed the first two sets of stone steps on the course. Recently, the steps on #7 were completed by adding the stone facing on the front of the steps and on Tuesday the steps on #4 were completed. This has been a great opportunity to improve the amenities on the course and again we would like to thank Randy Leath for donating the rock and equipment to construct the steps.

Over the next 2-3 months you will see more steps being constructed. We are planning to move to the right side of #18 green and then proceed to #2 tee box and #3 tee box where we will stone face the walk ways and add steps.

New Cart Traffic Posts

Around the course you will begin to see a small part of our winter project list coming to life. To minimize cart traffic damage along the path edges our staff has created Cart Traffic Posts. These post will be placed in areas of the golf course that carts are not permitted. Many of these areas consist of fescue beds at the enter and exit points of the fairways, cart parking areas along green complexes and tee complexes, and wear areas that suffer from cart traffic. The posts have been designed to be consist with the cart exit posts and color theme on the course of black and gray. Currently we have made 150 posts and will begin installing the posts throughout the week.
